What is ANC?
Active noise control (ANC), also known as Active Noise Cancellation/Cancelling, or Active Noise Reduction (ANR), is a method for reducing unwanted sound by the addition of a second sound specifically designed to cancel the first. It is a noise cancelling technology relative to the Passive Noise cancelling, which is one of the methods used in headsets/Earphones to reduce noise.
The Principle of ANC
In brief, the microphone collects the external environmental noise, and then transforms it into a reversed sound wave through the noise reduction system and adds it to the speaker end. The final sound heard by the human ear is: Environmental noise + Reversed environmental noise. The combination of the two kinds of noise can reduce the sensory noise. This is called "cancellation interference" in acoustics. See the figure below:
